Decisions on Reduction of GHG Emissions and Energy Efficency Regulations at MEPC 83

MEPC 83 approved draft amendments to MARPOL Annex VI related to GHG fuel Intensity and economic measures with remedial and surplus units. Following long discussions during ISWG-GHG and MEPC 83, draft amendments have been approved after voting. The expecting entry into date for the approved amendments is 01 March 2027. According to new regulation “Each ship to which MARPOL Annex VI Chapter 5 applies shall have an account with the IMO GFI Registry by 1 October 2027 and shall pay the annual administration fee to the IMO GFI Registry by 30 June 2028, and by 30 June of each year thereafter”.

In addition, MEPC 83 adopted the draft Amendments to the 2021 Guidelines on the Operational Carbon Intensity Reduction Factors Relative to Reference Lines (CII Reduction Factors Guidelines, G3) to define CII reduction (Z) factors for the years 2027 to 2030.
